Marquette Court System & Jurisdictions
There are three main judicial divisions in Marquette County, each responsible for certain categories of cases.
Marquette County Circuit Court (25th Circuit) — a court of general jurisdiction. It handles criminal cases involving felonies, civil lawsuits over $25,000, divorce and child custody cases, as well as appeals from the district court. The circuit court handles the most serious criminal charges.
The district court — 96th District Court — serves the entire county and deals with:
- Criminal cases involving misdemeanors
- Civil lawsuits up to $25,000
- Small claims cases up to $6,500
- Traffic violations and transportation cases
- Preliminary hearings in felony cases before transfer to Circuit Court
For cases related to wills, guardianship, conservatorship, and mental health, there is the Marquette Probate Court. This court also handles juvenile cases through the Marquette Juvenile Division. Adoptions, name change cases, and inheritance issues fall under the jurisdiction of the Probate Court. Necessary forms are available on the Probate Court forms page.

How to Get a Copy of a Marquette Court Document
You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways: online, in person, or by mail. The type of copy — regular or certified — depends on the purpose of use.
Certified copy contains the court seal and clerk's signature, confirming the document's authenticity. Such a copy is usually required for submission to other government agencies, employers, or for legal procedures. A regular (uncertified) copy is suitable for reference.
In Person
Contact the Marquette County Clerk's office, which maintains public records for the county:
Bring identification and know the case number or full name of the party — this will significantly speed up the process.
By Mail
Send a written request to the above address, specifying:
- Full name of the party or case number
- Type of document needed (e.g., judgment, order, transcript)
- Number of copies and whether a certified version is needed
- Return address and payment (check or money order payable to Marquette County Clerk)
Online
Through MiCOURT, you can view basic case information, but downloading a full document or obtaining a certified copy online is generally not possible. You will need to contact the clerk's office for this.
Certain records have restricted access. Adoption cases, some juvenile cases, and records protected by state or federal laws are not released without a court order. More details on restrictions can be found on the Records Management page of the Michigan Supreme Court.
Marquette Court Records Fees & Payment
The amount of fees is determined by the rules of the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) of Michigan and local administrative orders. Below are approximate fees — it is better to confirm the exact amount with the clerk's office before applying.
| Service | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Case search (by name) | $10 per name |
| Regular document copy | $1 per page |
| Certified copy | $10 + $1 for each additional page |
| Certification of a previously obtained copy | $10 |
Payment is accepted at the clerk's office in person — cash, check, or money order. When applying by mail, include a check or money order made payable to Marquette County Clerk. Check in advance for the possibility of card payment — not all offices accept electronic payments.
For obtaining a criminal history through the ICHAT system of the Michigan State Police, a separate fee is charged. Vital records — birth, marriage, death certificates — are processed through the Vital Records Department of the state and have their own fee schedule.
